Our History

The Firm was established in 1924 in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff-on-Sea. The two Mr Wheeldon’s, Father and Son originally occupied a small retail unit but quickly expanded as the demand for services grew.

In the 1930s, Mr Norman Deacon joined the Practice.Norman was a well known and respected practitioner; a former Chairman of the RICS, Essex County branch. He presided over the continued expansion of the Firm at Estate House at 10 Hamlet Court Road.

In 1995 the Firm relocated to Admirals House, 18 Nelson Street, Southend due to the growing number of clients requiring commercial and residential property expertise. The move ensured that the best possible level of service could be offered by providing an efficient and suitable headquarters to incorporate the latest information technology.

Simon Deacon qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1992 and in 1994 became a Partner with Stuart Amos. Upon Stuart’s retirement from the Practice, Simon became a sole practitioner.

In 1996 Wheeldon & Deacon merged with the property management section of Quintin Davis Associates, (formerly Taylor Lloyd) a well known firm of Chartered Surveyors who were founded in 1899 in Westcliff-on-Sea. Both firms have since their inception, carried out property management. Although the merger took place of the property management section, Wheeldon & Deacon ‘inherited’ the records for valuations and surveys that Quintin Davies Associates had compiled. This has resulted in Wheeldon & Deacon having one of the largest collections of survey and valuation records of properties in South East Essex.

Simon is a former Chairman of the RICS Essex Local Association and also served on the (National) RICS General Practice Divisional Council representing Essex. Simon has spoken to a wide variety of audiences on energy and property matters all over England from Blackpool to Bournemouth often providing lifelong learning to fellow professionals. He also served on the Government Advisory Committee for the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Locally, he is a former President of the Southend Business Luncheon Club; Chairman of Leigh-on-Sea 41 Club and Chairman and President of Leigh Round Table.
